The most prominent individuals featured in the collection are James King and Henry C. King. James King worked on an Ohio River flatboat between Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky. He later operated a wood yard that supplied fuel for boats on the Ohio. He died at the age of 84 in Saluda, Jefferson County, Indiana. Henry C. King, also of Saluda, served as a private in Company A of the 82nd Indiana Regiment from August 1862 until May 1865.

The collection contains general items relating to members of the King family of Jefferson County, Indiana, 18321925. Materials in the collection include two Civil War diaries of Henry C. King, December 1863June 1864 from Tennessee and Georgia in which he describes building bridges across the Tennessee River, drilling and everyday camp life. Also contained among the King family papers are some general financial and legal papers of James King including receipts, tax lists and a ledger sheet, 18321852.
The collection also contains letters of Robert King, 1925, address books, business cards, and printed material such as newspaper clippings, an 1881 Volunteer Manual, a lumber and logbook, 1882, and a 1908 pamphlet on the history of Madison, Indiana, and its participation in the Civil War.
Also contained in the collection are a significant number of King family photographs, ca. 1870s1920s, including family portraits, travel photographs from Texas and California, landscapes from around Hanover, Jefferson County, Indiana, and unidentified soldiers on board the USS Texas, 1908, and a group of soldiers in the signal corps from around the same period. Artifacts include medicine vials, a hand fan, and a mouth harp.
