NOTES: |
|
George Washington Baum (fl. 1840s–1890s) was born in Carroll County, Indiana, and was engaged in farming. On 22 April 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company A, 9th Indiana Infantry Regiment. After being mustered out of that regiment 29 July 1861, he enlisted as a corporal in the 41st Indiana Regiment (2nd Cavalry) on 18 September 1861. He was promoted to commissary sergeant in April 1864, and was mustered out in October 1864.
After military service, he married Laura A. Newell on 9 March 1865 and settled in Warren County, Indiana, to continue farming. They had two sons: Jasper Bird Baum (11 March 1872–22 December 1941) and Harry G. Baum (est. birth date: 1874).

Information in collection.
The bulk of the collection consists of Baum’s Civil War diaries, September 1861–September 1864, containing detailed daily accounts of his military experience. Topics include training, marching, engagements, writing to and receiving letters from home, and daily life with the 41st Indiana Regiment (2nd Indiana Cavalry).
Also contained in the collection are two letters Baum wrote to friends at home, discharge papers from the 9th and 41st regiments, and his official promotion notification to the rank of third sergeant. Other items in the collection include family portraits, handwritten poetry from the 1850s and an autograph book from an apparent military reunion in 1891.
The lantern slide is labeled “J.B. Baum,” and is assumed to belong to George Baum’s son, Jasper Bird Baum.
The entire collection has been microfilmed as F 1704.
