HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Meeker family resided in Stone Bluff, Fountain County, Indiana. Principal correspondents in the collection are Anna Meeker, a student at Union Christian College in Merom, IN in the 1890s who later married William Madigan of Veedersburg and died before 1913 and Holford Meeker who attended Union Christian College in the mid-1890s, served in the Spanish American War and was living in Stone Bluff in 1913. Their father, J.M. Meeker, was a trustee for the college. No other biographical information for the principal correspondents was attainable.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The bulk of the collection is made up of letters from Anna Meeker while a student at Union Christian College in Merom, Indiana to her stepmother Mary Virginia Wright Meeker (Jennie) in Stone Bluff, Indiana, 1892-1897. Topics discussed include life at college, classes taken and grades, friends, news from home and people and events at school. Meeker also wrote several letters to her brothers and sisters at home, particularly her sister, Tabitha Meeker. There also are several letters from Anna's brother, Holford M. Meeker, to his parents while at Union Christian College, 1894-1896, discussing prices, expenses, pleas for money, news from home and life at college. In addition, there are receipts, correspondence, and a grade card regarding Union Christian College and the Meekers including an unsigned copy of a letter from James Whitcomb Riley, April 19, 1907, endorsing the college. There is also a Meeker family photo album stored in Visual Collection.
