historical SKETCH

There have been three distinct movements of the Ku Klux Klan in the United States. The first movement flourished during Reconstruction in the southern states in the years following the Civil War.  The second Klan movement (which this collection represents) formed in Georgia in 1915, as an advocate for native-born, white, Protestant Americans. It became a prominent national organization during the 1920s, rising to political power in such states as Indiana, Oklahoma, and Oregon.  At the height of its activity national membership reached 1,500,000, with more than 300,000 Indiana members.  In the wake of scandals, Klan membership quickly declined in the later half of the twenties, but it did not disband until 1944.  The third and still active Klan movement, developed in the wake of World War II in reaction to the Cold War and the Civil Rights movement.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The bulk of this collection consists of membership and organizational records and papers of the Wayne County, Indiana, Ku Klux Klan.  The local chapter was the Whitewater Klan #60, located in Richmond, Indiana.  Included in the collection are:  official documents and communiqués; correspondence; informational materials about the organization; meeting minutes; financial records; account books and ledgers; publications; membership lists; membership dues records; flyers, leaflets and other printed material; miscellaneous papers; robe number book; and Klan robes, hood, and gavel.  The majority of the records concentrate on the period from 1922 to 1927.  Though some of the material relates to Klan activities on the state and national level, most of it pertains to Wayne County exclusively.

The collection is a composite of two individual collections which have been integrated:  the first, given by Norbert Flamm of Webster, Indiana; the second, given to the IHSL by Franklin Ritchie of Centerville, Indiana.

Many of the records and papers are available on microfilm.  The collection guide includes a list which indicates the reel(s) where records may be found.  The Klan robes, hood, and gavel are located in artifact storage.
