BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Samuel C. Vance (d. 1830) was an officer in the U.S. Army serving in the Northwest Territory (1791–1802).  From 1799–1802 Vance served as deputy paymaster of the U. S. Army stationed at Fort Washington, near Cincinnati.  From 1803–30 he was merchant and land speculator at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn County, Indiana, where he was instrumental in founding the town in 1802.  Vance served as Dearborn County Clerk, 1803–13, and was register for the U. S. Land Office at Fort Wayne, Allen County, 1823–29.

The collection also includes the papers of Vance's son, Lawrence M. Vance (1816–63), who was a partner with Harvey Bates in a general merchandise store in Indianapolis (1838).  Lawrence Vance was also a contractor for the construction of the Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroad (1852–53) and other railroad lines.
