BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Thomas Marshall (1811–1901) was born in Knox County, Tennessee, but moved with his Quaker family to Wayne County, Indiana, in 1812.  The family returned to Tennessee for a few months in 1812 but permanently settled in Wayne County in 1813.  Thomas Marshall remained on his family's farm until 1833 when he married Cynthia Swain and settled in Economy, Perry Township, in Wayne County.  They had five children (Clayton, Rhoda, Swain, Alonzo, and Orlando) before Mrs. Marshall died in 1851.  Three years later, he married Elvira Macy and they had two children (Cynthia and Elmer).  In addition to farming, Thomas Marshall served as Perry Township trustee from 1854–1876.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists primarily of family correspondence from 1851–1901.  Topics discussed in the letters include farming, politics, the Civil War, and family affairs.  Included are letters from Marshall's relatives in Iowa (1855–1901); letters written by Marshall and his wife from Economy (1880–1901); and letters from students at the Spiceland Academy in Henry County (1869–73).  There also are letters from family members in Tennessee (1851–60) and Kansas (1890s).  The collection also contains letters from Marshall's sons, Swain of the 8th Indiana Regiment serving in Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, and Georgia (1862–65); and Alonzo of the 69th Indiana Regiment serving in Kentucky and Tennessee, and from a military hospital in St. Louis, Missouri (1862–65).  There are additional letters from other relatives serving in Indiana and Iowa regiments.  Also included is a minute book from the Daughters of Temperance chapter in Economy (1852–54).  The collection includes a significant number of letters to Alonzo Marshall and his wife, Margaret (Maggie) Wright, from children and relatives in Tennessee, Iowa, Oregon, and California (1857–1920).
