Historical SKETCH

Knox County was organized by Winthrop Sargent on June 20, 1790. He was sent by the Governor of the Northwest Territory at the time, General Arthur St. Clair. Knox County encompassed a huge amount of land at the beginning. Included in the boundary was a good portion of Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The county’s land area slowly shrunk until December 16, 1816, when it reached its current size. The county seat is Vincennes, which many believe to be founded in 1732. Knox County has been home to many politicians during its history. One of its most famous is William Henry Harrison, the ninth President of the United States.
