The Bethell–Warren family included Thomas F. Bethell (1816–1873), a Newburgh (Warrick County), Indiana, merchant involved in Ohio River shipping, captain in the 16th Regiment of U.S. Infantry during the Mexican War, and Democratic member of the Indiana House of Representatives (1857); Union Bethell (1826–1907), Newburgh merchant; William Warren, Sr. (d.1880), a farmer in Vanderburgh County; William Warren, Jr. (1844.–ca. l937), private in the 24th Indiana Regiment (1862–1863), deputy collector of internal revenue in Vanderburgh County (1866–1869), Vanderburgh County auditor (1878–1882), and Evansville banker; and Eliza Bethell Warren (1851.–ca. l950), wife of William Warren, Jr., and daughter of Thomas Bethell.
The papers include letters written by William Warren, Jr., from Evansville to his fiancee and wife, Eliza Bethell (1876–1887); account books of Thomas and Union Bethell (1857–1898) relating to the shipment of goods, particularly tobacco on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers; Mexican War military papers of Thomas Bethell; Civil War military papers and letters of William Warren, Jr. (1862–1863); diary of William Warren, Sr. (1849–1865); letter books of William Warren, Jr., while deputy collector of internal revenue (1866–1869); receipts and other business papers of the Bethells and William Warren, Jr.; and minutes of an 1833 meeting to erect a school and community building in Scott Township, Vanderburgh County.
