BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Bethany Presbyterian Church was founded in 1820 in Owen County, Indiana, near Spencer. At first the church met in the home of Ninian Steele, then in a log building. After four or five years the building was moved eighty rods, then rebuilt and used until 1873. At that time, a new frame building was erected, and the old building rented as a dwelling. In the 1870s the congregation dwindled because two groups of communicants moved west, one to Iowa and the other to Texas. There was a centennial celebration in 1920.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of the session records of Bethany Presbyterian Church. These records were written in four books, and include lists of communicants, session minutes, and major decisions.

The records are contained on two rolls of microfilm. The first roll, F 0586 contains Books 1 and 2 that date from 1820–1920. This roll also includes a ten-page brochure entitled Centennial Celebration of Bethany Church. The second roll, F 1288 contains Books 3 and 4 dated 1923–1988. This roll includes two items that were laid into the third book. The first is a notice of a winter meeting (1934) and synopses of summer and fall meetings from the Presbytery of Indianapolis (pages 32–33). The second is a flyer for Services Dedication the Milligan Marking Which Show the Location of the First Bethany Presbyterian Church, Founded March 20, 1820 (pages 34–35).
