NOTES: |
|
John Gregory was born on 19 January 1844 in Williamsport, Warren County, Indiana, son of Benjamin Franklin Gregory and Hannah Heffley. Benjamin Franklin Gregory was a prominent citizen of Williamsport.
On 29 May 1866, John married Lila Florence Chandler, with whom he had seven children: Benjamin F., Florence Ethelynd, Winona Bertha, Grace Blanche, Manona Pearl, John Rupert, and Sarah Ruth.
John became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1859 and served the church in various leadership roles throughout his lifetime. John also belonged to the Knights of Honor, Lodge No. 2045. Early in his career, John worked in the mercantile business and the legal profession. In February 1870, John replaced J. A. and H. F. Canutt as editor and publisher of the Warren Republican, a newspaper established in December 1854. In 1881 and 1882, John served as a member of the State Legislature. He continued as editor and publisher of the Republican until his death on 10 November 1908.
A portrait of John Gregory can be found on page 776 in the book Past and Present of Fountain and Warren Counties, Indiana.
