historical SKETCH

The New Albany and Salem Railroad Company, a predecessor to the Monon railway line, was chartered in 1847 in Providence (now Borden), Indiana.  Lines were completed from New Albany to Salem on 14 January 1851, and from Michigan City to Lafayette in 1853. The company purchased the Crawfordsville and Wabash Railroad in 1852. This line connected Crawfordsville with Lafayette. A 56-mile stretch between Gosport and Crawfordsville was completed in 1854. The railroad went into receivership in 1858, and was renamed the Louisville, New Albany, and Chicago Railroad in 1859. In 1897 the company was reorganized as the Louisville, New Albany, and Chicago Railway Company. The name was changed to “The Monon” on 10 January 1956.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection includes one payroll ledger for the New Albany and Salem Railroad Company and an 1865 pamphlet titled Douw D. Williamson, Trustee vs. New Albany and Salem Railroad

The payroll ledger dates from 1855-57. The entries include workmen’s names, numbers of days worked, and wages owed.  Details such as the location of work, and the employee’s profession are sometimes included.

Douw D. Williamson, Trustee vs. New Albany and Salem Railroad includes a proposal issued to shareholders by the president and directors of the New Albany and Salem Railroad Company. The proposal concerns an extension of bond issues and potential reorganization of the company. The volume also includes two Circuit Court judgments, dated 24 June 1858 and 28 May 1859. The judgments address the company’s financial status and the role of receivership trustee Douw D. Williamson.
