HISTORICAL SKETCH

The National Woman Suffrage League was founded in 1869 by Susan
B. Anthony (chairman) and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (president)
"to secure National protection for women in the exercise of
their right to vote".  In 1890 the organization merged with the
American Woman Suffrage Association to form the National
American Woman Suffrage Association.  The American Woman
Suffrage Association, which had also been formed in 1869,
concentrated on attaining suffrage through amendments to state
constitutions.  Stanton was the president of the combined
organizations while Anthony served as vice president at large.
The association apparently remained active until women received
the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment in
1920.

The Indiana National Woman Suffrage Association was started in
1887 to "organize the State of Indiana, thoroughly, with a view
to effective legislative and congressional suffrage work".
May Wright Sewall was chairman of the Indiana Association and
Helen M. Gougar was its president. The organization held
meetings in the Indiana Congressional Districts in the effort
to influence national legislation.
