NOTES: |

The Indiana Woman's Suffrage Association, originally known as the Woman's Rights Association of Indiana, was founded in Richmond (Wayne County), Indiana, in October 1851. Hannah Hiatt of Winchester, Ind., was its first president; others associated with its early history included Amanda M. Way and Mary F. Thomas.
According to the preamble to its constitution (1852), the association was founded to promulgate "information regarding woman's condition, needs and claims." Its constitution stated that "all laws or customs, having only for their perpetuation the plea that they are time-honored, which do in any manner infringe upon woman's equal rights, trammel her energies, cramp her efforts, or place her before the eyes of the world or her family, in an inferior or governed position, are wrong entirely, and should be immediately abolished."
The association did not meet from 1859 to 1869, when it was reorganized as the Indiana Woman's Suffrage Association.
