The anonymous author of the journal was a young man who left Greencastle, Indiana, for the gold fields of California in 1850. He turned 19 during the journal.

The collection consists of one manuscript journal of 119 pages covering a 179-day period in 1850 during which the author and a group of other young men travelled from Greencastle, Indiana, to Hangtown, California. The author describes scenery, daily events, a death from cholera, encounters with Indians, and towns along the way. The journal may have been recopied from an original manuscript.
