Beattie McClelland (1810-1892) was born in County Down, Ireland. He came to America in 1827 and was naturalized in 1835. He first settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania (near Uniontown). He had studied some law in Ireland, and is said to have studied with James Buchanan (Buchanan lived in Lancaster at the other end of the state, and was serving in the U. S. Senate during most of this period). At any rate he became a lawyer, and was appointed a deputy attorney general in 1839. In the same year he moved to Winchester, Indiana, was admitted to the bar there, and three years later became a probate judge. In 1852 he moved to Columbus, Indiana.
Through the 1840s and 1850s McClelland held a number of offices: he was appointed a director of the State Bank in 1852 and again in 1856; in 1853 he was named colonel in a militia regiment; in 1859 he was appointed commissioner of the Sinking Fund, and in 1860 judge of the court of common pleas.
McClelland's daughter Jennie, mother of the donor, taught school in Columbus, receiving a teacher's license in 1863.
