Hermann E. Frauer (b. 1841) was born in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg in Germany, and came to Indiana in 1855 with his father, I. C. Frauer. In 1869 the elder Frauer took over an apothecary shop founded eleven years before by Charles Roesch. In 1876 Hermann Frauer succeeded to the business, which he was still operating in 1905, with premises at 246 East Washington Street. At least in its early years, the firm advertised itself as "Deutsche Apothek."

This collection, filling three folders, contains two notebook formularies and two folders with loose apothecary formulae and a few other odd papers. Many of the formulae are in German, some apparently in abbreviated Latin, the rest in English. Most items are undated; the earliest dated item is 1875, and there is one clipping dated 1901 and one letterhead from the period (after 1898) when Indianapolis had an Old and a New telephone company.
