HISTORICAL SKETCH

Roselyn Vivian Comer Richardson (23 August 1913- ) was born in Roberta, Georgia. Her parents were Arthur and Everlena Walker Comer. She graduated from Fort Valley Normal and Industrial School, a boarding school located in Fort Valley, Georgia. From 1930-1934, she attended Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia. Two years later, she received a certificate with a major in community organization and group work from the Atlanta School of Social Work. She worked for the American Friends Service Committee as a Southeastern Field Secretary from 1936-1938.

Roselyn Comer married attorney and former Indiana legislator, Henry J. Richardson, Jr. (1902-1983) on 18 September 1938. They made their home at 4057 Rookwood Avenue in Indianapolis, later moving to North Illinois Street. They had two sons, Henry J. III (1941- ) and Rodney C. (1948- ).

Richardson held no salaried position from 1938-1971 while she and her husband raised their two sons. She supported several of her husband's projects, as she directed many of her own activities. She has been active in numerous civic, religious, educational, and political organizations. Soon after arriving in Indianapolis, Richardson served on the Board of Directors of the Phyllis Wheatley Young Women's Christian Association, was co-director of the Intercollegiate Co-educational Club of the Senate Avenue Young Men's Christian Association, and served as a director of the Flanner Guild. As an active member of Witherspoon United Presbyterian Church, she was vice-president of the Women's Association, co-organizer of several Church circles, organizer of various interest groups for youth and adults, sponsor of the Interdenominational Ecumenical Youth Group, and co-chair of the building fund drive.

Henry J. and Roselyn Richardson became actively involved in school desegregation when their oldest son was denied entrance to their neighborhood school (Indianapolis Public School #43) located at 4001 N. Capitol Avenue. Without success, she and another mother appealed to the superintendent of the school district. This was the beginning of a community struggle that led to the passage of the 1949 Indiana school desegregation law. As a former legislator, Henry J. Richardson was instrumental in the composition of the bill that became the law, as well as aiding James Hunter, the bill's sponsor in piloting it through the legislature.

Richardson was very active in the parent-teacher organizations of her children's schools, namely Indianapolis Public Schools #43, #87, and Shortridge High School. As a board member of the Shortridge High School PTA, she was organizer and first chairperson of the Pupil Motivation Committee. The emphasis of the program was to present role models who shared their careers with students during study halls and free periods.

From 1971-1978, Richardson was director of the new Career Sampling Program located at Shortridge High School. The experimental program, sanctioned by the Indianapolis School Board, did not have precedents, guidelines, or career education materials. Richardson designed and created handbooks and forms for the program. Agencies, companies, and professionals were approached to allow students--alone, or in small groups--to "sample careers" on-the-job for one or two experiences during school/work hours. After-school or weekend sampling often lasted a semester or longer. More than 500 students participated annually at large or small establishments including the Bicycle Repair Shop, Detroit Diesel Allison, Eli Lilly Company, Indiana National Bank (now NBD Bank), and Methodist Hospital.

After the death of her husband, Richardson founded the Friends of the Indianapolis Urban League, a support group of the local league. She continues to be a member of the Browsers Book Club, a local book review group that she helped found in 1945; to serve on the board of the Alpha Home for the Aged; and in 1985 she became a member of Dialogue Today, a local group of Jewish and African-American women who meet and discuss racial issues.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Roselyn Richardson Papers fill 41 manuscript boxes and 5 oversized folders. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, programs, photographs and other visuals (designated by the two-letter code, VC), and printed matter. It is divided into six major divisions: correspondence; personal memorabilia; organizations; topics; other biographies; and publications.

The first part of the collection (boxes 1-8) contains correspondence that chronicles much of Richardson's life from 1927-1993. There are letters to family, friends, politicians, and others. Included in box 8 are a wealth of family photographs--images of Roselyn Comer Richardson; her mother, siblings, and other relatives; her husband and sons, as well as the family home located in the Butler-Tarkington area in Indianapolis; and individuals and groups, both identified and unidentified. The photographs date from the early 1900s through 1992. Most of the photographs in the collection are identified. There are images of Roselyn Comer Richardson's early childhood in Georgia; her student days at Clark College and Atlanta University; her work with the American Friends Service Committee; and her life in Indianapolis from 1938 to the present. Box 8, folders 23 and 24 contain several black/library/manuscripts/collection_guides/white and color laser photocopies of family photographs (dated 1916-1992). Many of the original images are contained in box 8; although some of the photographs represented by the photocopied images are filed with their pertinent organizational or institutional materials located elsewhere in the collection. There are extensive notes about the photographs written on the photocopies by the collection's donor. Although there are vestiges of materials related to the Richardson family throughout the collection, the first two sections contain the bulk of it. It should be noted that there are newsclippings documenting the activities of family members in box 39, folders 9-13.

Boxes 9-14 contain several items of personal memorabilia including calendars dated 1937-1992, various certificates, invitations and announcements, menus, and programs. Some of the more interesting items are dance cards from Richardson's college era (box 10, folder 18); a guest book, 1943-1964, signed by visitors-including Thurgood Marshall- to the Richardson's home (box 11, folder 3); and a signed Lena Horne program, "The Lady and her Music" (box 13, folder 11). The first several folders in box 14 include items related to Henry Richardson, Jr. (including programs, tributes, resolutions, and sympathy expressions at his death), as well as notes from speeches prepared for and by Roselyn Richardson for a variety of occasions.

Roselyn Richardson is associated with numerous social, civic, educational, and religious organizations and institutions. Materials pertaining to these are arranged alphabetically in boxes 14-35. Especially prevalent are materials pertaining to Shortridge High School. Both of Richardson's sons, Henry III and Rodney C., graduated from Shortridge. In addition to graduating from their father's high school alma mater, they followed in their father's footsteps and became attorneys. In 1971, Roselyn Richardson began working at Shortridge in her first paid position since 1938. As director of the Career Sampling Program (CSP), she was very active in identifying career opportunities and providing career education for students, especially juniors and seniors. Shortridge High School materials are contained in boxes 23-29. Richardson was a founder of the Friends of the Indianapolis Urban League. The organization was founded in 1984 to support the agenda of the local Urban League affiliate. Her husband, Henry J. Jr., who died in 1983, had been a founder of the IUL in 1965. The Urban League materials (including IUL, Friends of the IUL, and the National Urban League) are in boxes 30-35. There are materials related to several other organizations and institutions, many in which Richardson had an active involvement. Of particular note are materials pertaining to Alpha Kappa Alpha, American Friends Service Committee, Browsers Book Club, Clark College, and Dialogue Today, a local organization of Black and Jewish women.

Information pertaining to subject topics is contained in boxes 36-37 and 40-41. Richardson, like her husband, has been very interested in civil rights issues. There are several folders that have materials that pertain to school and housing desegregation; civil rights; and race relations. Newsclippings contained in boxes 40-41 cover a broad range of topics including numerous organizations, education, housing and school desegregation, and human and race relations.

Richardson collected biographical and general information about many individuals. Box 35, folder 19 contains biographical sketches. Sermons and statements are arranged alphabetically by author in boxes 35 and 36. Obituaries, mostly contained in funeral programs, are in box 36, folders 9-11. Newsclipping about individuals are arranged alphabetically in box 41, folders 7-27.

In addition to collecting and clipping materials related to various topics, Richardson subscribed to and collected several periodicals and printed materials that contained articles and items of interest to her and/or her family. This varied selection of periodicals are arranged alphabetically in boxes 38 and 39.
