This collection (ca. 1912-1936) contains material related to Ruth Greathouse. Her baby record is located in folder 1. The bulk of the collection (folders 3-5) includes correspondence to Greathouse from W. E. Mayo from April 1934 to August 1936. Mayo was in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Through early August 1934 he was located at Camp Knox in Kentucky, before moving to a CCC camp near Cromwell, Indiana. He wrote Greathouse, generally three to four times a month. His letter details his activities and work assignments, as well as his affection for Greathouse.
Ruth's father, Archie Greathouse owned the Greathouse Emporium located on Indiana Avenue. During the 1920s he was a community activist who filed suit in an unsuccessful effort against the Indianapolis Public Schools establishment of a segregated high school. An Archie Greathouse calendar is located in folder 6. There is a colorful advertisement for Kingan's (later Hygrade's), a meat packing company and large employer in Indianapolis in folder 7.
