BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Jacob Schramm (1805–80) was a Bavarian (German) immigrant who came to the United States in 1835 and settled on a farm in Sugar Creek Township, Hancock County in 1836.  His son, Wilhelm August Schramm (1840–1909) operated the family's farms and was also an agent for the Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Hancock and Marion counties.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection is principally composed of August Schramm's seventy-eight diaries covering the period 1851–1908.  The diaries contain extensive descriptions of Schramm's daily life, including information about his family, farming, social life, travel, politics, business conditions, and the German community in central Indiana.  The volumes from 1851–58 are in German; the remaining volumes are in English.

Also included are four cashbooks in German (1859–1911) for the farms of August Schramm and his brother, Gustave; a writing book in German kept by August's sister, Anna (1845); a small amount of correspondence (1842; 1852–1902); a draft of "An Account of the Journey of Jacob Schramm," translated by Emma Vonnegut (1930); and The Life of Jacob Schramm, handwritten in German by August Schramm (1905) with an English translation.
