LOCAL HISTORY SERVICES:: organizational assessments | ||||||||||

Local historical organizations sometimes require an in-depth and objective assessment of their operations by an outside professional. This is especially true when initiating long-range planning. The Museum Assessment Program (MAP) of the American Association of Museums is an excellent vehicle for obtaining such assistance. However, if your local historical organization does not operate a museum or is too small to qualify for a MAP grant, you may contact the Local History Services Department to arrange an assessment patterned after the MAP program. An assessment normally involves the filling out of a self-study questionnaire and providing copies of bylaws and other documents to the LHS office prior to an on-site visit by the Director of Local History Services. During the on-site visit, which normally requires a full day, the organization's mission, programs, policies, procedures, and finances are examined in detail. It is important to note that this is a non-judgmental evaluation designed to highlight both the strengths of the organization and the areas where improvements are desirable. Strategies for improvement will be discussed and in-depth assistance provided as the organization proceeds up the spectrum of improvement. The fee for organizational assessments, if a written report is desired, is $250.00. Fees for assessments not requiring a written report are negotiable. |
