AIM 2008 Conference Proposals Due Feb. 29
The Association of Indiana Museums (AIM) is accepting proposals for the 2008 AIM Annual Conference is fast approaching! It will be held at Conner Prairie Museum in Fishers, Indiana on Aug. 24 and 25, 2008.


If you have an idea and would like to pitch it, please contact Tiffany Hatfield, AIM Coordinator at
coordinator@indianamuseums.org or (317) 234-5255 for a session proposal form. The deadline for proposals is Feb. 29, 2008.

 


Museum Assessment Program (MAP) Applications Due Feb. 15
There's an affordable way for you to strengthen your museum's operations, build your capacity, and establish priorities. For 26 years, museums of all sizes and types have partnered with the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) to attain excellence in operations and planning.  MAP is a low-cost confidential process of guided self-study that includes consultation with a museum professional.

The Museum Assessment Program is supported through a cooperative agreement between the American Association of Museums (AAM) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

 


National Council for the Social Studies Great Lakes Regional Conference
The NCSS Great Lakes Regional Conference will meet Feb. 28-29, 2008 in Indianapolis.  Visit the website at

CCAHA Disaster, Protection and Security Program in May 2008
The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts presents Preparing for the Unexpected: Protection and Security for Cultural Collections.  Hosted and co-sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the conference will be held May 12 and 13, 2008, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Sessions will include…

  • Disaster Mitigation and Emergency Preparedness
  • Crisis Communication
  • Exercising the Plan (an interactive session)
  • Recovery of Paper-Based Collections (a hands-on interactive session)
  • Fire Safety: Detection, and Suppression
  • Understanding Security Risks


The fee for this two-day program is $185 for CCAHA member institutions and $210 for non-members. A second registrant from the same institution, registering at the same time, can register for $92.50/CCAHA members, $105/non-members. Registration begins immediately. 2008 Governor’s Conference on Service and Volunteerism
Online registration is now open for the 2008 Governor’s Conference on Service and Volunteerism! Those wishing to register at the discounted Early Bird rate may go to

OFBCI and Indiana Campus Compact have partnered for this year’s conference, which spans two days and features 75 breakout sessions spread across seven (7) tracks. Special highlights include: a conference service project; recognition of some of Indiana’s most dedicated volunteers; and networking opportunities for volunteers and professionals in the fields of service learning, national service, volunteer management, youth development, and nonprofit management.

Online Course:  Introduction to Security: Protecting Museums, Collections Staff and Visitors
Security must be a priority for every museum, regardless of size. Introduction to Securityteaches basic, practical approaches to protecting against threats such as theft, vandalism, violent acts, natural disasters, fire and environmental hazards. Topics include selecting security systems, determining security needs and how to build affordable security systems. Screening, hiring, firing, workplace violence, policies and procedures and emergency management planning are covered as well.


Participants in Introduction to Security work at their own pace through sections and interact through online chats. Instructor Steve Layne is available at scheduled times during the course for email support. Introduction to Security includes online literature, slide lectures and student-teacher/group-teacher dialog. The course is limited to 20 participants.

Stevan P. Layne, instructor for the course, is the principal consultant and chief executive of Layne Consultants International, a leading provider of cultural property protection advice. Steve is a former police chief, public safety director and museum security director. He is the author of the Cultural Property Protection Manual, and the Business Survival Guide. Steve regularly presents to professional associations and has consulted with more than 400 museums and other institutions. Steve is the founding director of the International Foundation for Cultural Property Protection and responsible for the professional training and certification of more than 1,000 museum professionals.

Daviess County Historical Society and Museum Open House March 1
On March 1, the Daviess County Historical Society and Museum will host an open house to showcase improvements to the historic Mason’s Building in Washington, In.  Admission for the day will be free and the doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The building project improved the buildings accessibility by adding an elevator, installing a ramp, modifying the third floor bathroom, and updating the electrical system.  The project was funded through grants from Toyota and REMC, as well as a loan from First National Bank of Odon.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration, January 21
Celebrate one of America’s greatest Civil Rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement in Indiana through an exhibition, collections, crafts, performances and films at the Indiana History Center. Crafts, performances and activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by the Martin Luther King Center’s annual awards ceremony in the Basile Theater. Performers include Eastern Star Church Choir, Kenyettá Dance Company, Asante Children’s Theatre Kwaanza Choir, Write Me Project and Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. There is no cost for this free event at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center presented by IndyGo.  Snacks and family-friendly menu items will be available for purchase in the Stardust Terrace Café.

“By showcasing images from the Indiana Historical Society collection, we have the opportunity to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all those who marched alongside him, oftentimes in front of local landmarks visitors will recognize from their own city or neighborhood,” said Eloise Scroggins, coordinator of IHS Exhibitions Research and Collections. “This emphasizes the point that it takes us all working together to share in the dream and truly effect change.”


Images, artifacts and space for families to read and learn more about Martin Luther King Jr., the Civil Rights Movement and Black History will be spread throughout the Indiana History Center’s Lacy Gallery, Eli Lilly Hall and mezzanine, and Basile Theater mezzanine.

Third Annual Matching Gifts Best Practices Survey
A revised and upgraded Matching Gifts Best Practices Survey has been created to allow a greater depth and breadth of details for analysis including questions on Matching Gift Stewardship.


This data will be compared and contrasted to prior surveys with the continued intent of providing ideas on how matching gifts practices can be made more effective.  The survey requires 10-15 minutes.  Go to http://tinyurl.com/35cntr to participate online or go to http://tinyurl.com/2zvw5b to print a hardcopy.

AASLH Invites Nominations for 2008 Leadership in History Awards Program
The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) invites nominations for the 2008 Leadership in History Awards.  Now in its 63rd year, the Awards Program is the most prestigious national recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of local, state and regional history.  AASLH initiated the Awards Program in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout America.


The AASLH  Leadership in History Awards Program recognizes exemplary work completed by state or federal historical societies, institutions or agencies; regional, county or local historical societies, institutions or agencies; specialized subject societies in related fields such as oral history, genealogy, folklore, archaeology, business history, railroad history, etc.; junior historical societies; privately owned museums or foundations; individuals; and organizations outside the field of traditional historical agencies.  Awards are given for general excellence, exhibits, public and educational programming, special projects, publications, multimedia, individual achievement and preservation or restoration projects. Nominees need not be members of AASLH to qualify.

Indiana nominations are due to state awards chair Janna Bennett on March 1, 2008.

 

Nominations are then reviewed by a national committee in the summer of 2008 with formal presentation of the awards made during the AASLH Annual Meeting, Sept. 9-12, 2008, in Rochester, Ny. 


The American Association for State and Local History is a not-for-profit professional organization of individuals and institutions working to preserve and promote history.  From its headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, AASLH provides leadership and support for its members who preserve and interpret state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all Americans.  AASLH publishes books, technical publications, a quarterly magazine, and monthly newsletter. The association also sponsors regional and national training workshops and an annual meeting. Daviess County Historical Society Receives $5,000 from DCCF
The Daviess County Community Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the Davies County Historical Society and Museum for a project to update the kitchen.  Plans include a warming kitchen to facilitate using the dining hall for large groups.

WPA Public Art Calendar Available at DHPA
The Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA)’s calendar for 2008 celebrates the 75th anniversary of the WPA Public Art programs with a series of photos showing a variety of mural art throughout the state.  The calendars are being sold at the Indiana Historical Bureau for $7 but are 20% off for the month of January ($5.60 + tax).  Shipping and handling will apply if order must be mailed.  Contact Matt Allison at (317) 232-2535 or at
