The Indiana Historical
Society (IHS) seeks candidates for the part-time
position of conservation technician II. The IHS
library, the William Henry Smith Memorial Library, is a
special collections library consisting of rare and
archival materials including early manuscripts, bound
manuscript volumes, books, pamphlets, maps, graphic
works and photograph and negatives focusing on Indiana
and the Old Northwest. The conservation lab is a
state-of-the-art facility with a current staff of
one full-time paper conservator and one full time
senior director, conservation. For more

About the
position
The conservation technician II
provides support for Conservation’s preservation and
conservation plan of the largely paper-based research
collections held by the IHS library. Duties
include:
Evaluating and collection items and stabilizing same by
providing custom housing such as phase boxes, wrappers,
and other protective enclosures; performing basic paper
conservation to archival collections such as surface
cleaning, washing, and mending; performing condition
surveys and entering survey data in database, assisting
with environmental monitoring and managing photographic
documentation of collections borrowed for exhibitions,
managing preservation supply inventory, assisting with
examination of in-coming collections, participating in
disaster response operations. Complete job

Essential knowledge,
abilities and skills
Applicants must possess a
respect for historical research materials and the people
working at the local level with regards to collecting,
preserving, and interpreting history along with a high
regard for history, the historical profession, and the
mission of the Indiana Historical Society. The position
requires tact, diplomacy, sensitivity and discretion;
and the ability to work and communicate well with a
variety of people, including IHS visitors and program
participants, volunteers and staff. Strong
written and oral communication skills are also
musts.
Position requires flexibility and an ability to order
tasks and follow through without close supervision as
well as promptness, reliability, ability to juggle
multiple priorities and meet deadlines. A good sense of
humor is also a must.
Qualifications
Required:
-
Bachelor’s degree in arts or
sciences, preferably with a major that is materials
based, i.e., studio art, archeology, or material
culture.

Minimum of one year’s
experience in conservation lab related area with basic
knowledge of collections conservation and essential
knowledge of the field.
Preferred:
-
Experience performing minor
treatments to paper based materials or books in a
professional setting.
Pay and
benefits
The position is budgeted for up
to 30 hours/week with a flexible schedule between the
hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday. Some
weekend and evening hours may be required. Hourly rate
offered will be based on experience and skills. Part-time
employees are not eligible for group health and dental
insurance, but are eligible to participate in voluntary
benefits.

The Indiana Historical Society

coordinator, LHS operations. The LHS department serves
the needs of local historical organizations throughout
the state by providing guidance, training opportunities,
loaned resources (mostly publications), etc. The
Coordinator is primarily engaged in assisting the
director and assistant director, LHS, especially with
database-related tasks, administration of the County
Historian Program and administrative support for
workshops and training sessions.

of paper
conservator. The [aper
conservator supports the implementation of the IHS
preservation plan and performs conservation procedures
for IHS collections on a wide variety of rare,
paper-based materials, including manuscripts, prints,
drawings, maps and bound materials. Work is done in
a new, state-of-the-art, 2,000-square-foot paper and
book lab with a large resource library and private
office space. Responsibilities
include: In
consultation with collections staff and senior director,
conservation, examine and analyze collections materials,
document items through written and photographic means,
develop and write treatment reports, and perform
treatment in a timely fashion. Working with senior
director, conservation, work with private nonprofit
organizations to selective paper-based items, and
consult with the public about preservation measures for
personal collections. Manage in-coming
materials in purpose-built 1,500-square-foot segregation
and examination area. Train and spot
supervise departmental interns. Perform
condition surveys for a wide variety of bound and flat
paper materials; rehouse or stabilize as required. Perform
intermediate lab treatments required for
exhibitions. Keep abreast of
conservation techniques and equipment; assist with
researching and ordering equipment and supplies. Serve on Disaster
Response Team and act as director of department in
absence of the director, conservation, especially in the
event of an emergency to collections. Complete job

Essential knowledge,
abilities, and skills
Prospective applicants should
have demonstrated excellence performing a broad range of
complex conservation treatments with an ability to
manage task at hand and complete work in a timely
fashion. Position
requires ability to work with stereomicroscope and
perform all phases of examination of original work along
with experience and ability to interpret collection
needs and document treatments in written and
photographic form. Good
communication skills are a must to work well with other
professionals and support staff as well as experience in
training and supervising subordinate staff, as well as
good presentation skills for participation in production
of public workshops and programs regarding preservation
concepts. Prospective
candidates should also have a working knowledge of the
Windows environment, including word-processing, database
management, E-mail, and Web browsers.
Qualifications
Required:

Graduate degree from a
recognized training program in paper and/or book
conservation.

Minimum of two years
experience beyond graduate program training in
recognized, formal conservation
facility.
