“Hoagy Carmichael” State Historical Marker to be Dedicated in Bloomington

A public dedication ceremony for an Indiana state historical marker is scheduled for June 2. The state historical marker recognizing Hoagy Carmichael will be dedicated at 114 S. Indiana Avenue, Bloomington at 11 A.M Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

The text follows for the state marker entitled “Hoagy Carmichael”:

Born and reared in Bloomington, he is considered one of the most important American songwriters of the twentieth century. Began attending Indiana University 1920; graduated with a law degree 1926. Tried law as career, but returned to music. Inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame 1971. Died on December 27, 1981 in California; buried in Bloomington. Hoagy wrote that he composed “Stardust” in part on the piano of the Book Nook located here. Among his other popular songs were “Heart and Soul,” “Georgia on My Mind,” “Lazybones,” and “Ole Buttermilk Sky,” which was nominated for an Academy Award 1946. Won an Academy Award 1951 for “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening” from Here Comes the Groom.

Everyone is invited to attend this dedication ceremony for one of Indiana’s greatest songwriters of the twentieth century.

Historical markers commemorate significant Indiana individuals, places, and events, and they help communities throughout Indiana promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. Via the Internet, that history reaches a worldwide audience. For more than 90 years the Indiana Historical Bureau, an agency of the State of Indiana, has been marking Indiana history. Since 1947, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold lettering and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. There are approximately 500 of these markers across the state.

For further information about this marker, the state Historical Marker Program, and other resources about Indiana, visit the Indiana Historical Bureau website at www.IN.gov/history or call (317) 232-2537.

Delphi Area Heritage Transportation Festival

Experience the thrill of yesteryear!  Come to Delphi Indiana in Carroll County on Father’s Day weekend, June 16 and 17, and experience transportation as it was in an earlier era. The Delphi area, 70 miles northwest of Indianapolis and near Lafayette just off Interstate 65, has recreated the methods of transportation that settled Indiana from the mid part of the 1800s and has invited one and all to visit and participate in its annual celebration of transportation.  The third annual festival lets your family experience the sites and sounds of transportation in Indiana by riding in all types of vehicles throughout our town as you enjoy the fun. Ride a canal boat on our restored section of the Wabash and Erie Canal, enjoy the downtown Delphi splendor as you ride a horse drawn carriage, listen to the clang of the bell riding the Interurban Trolley as you go from place to place.  Plenty of food and period music will be on hand along the way, as well as street vendors selling transportation related odds and ends.  Try your skill and endurance at our bicycle rally or canoe races.  Come to the airport Sunday morning to watch a wide variety of airplanes fly while eating a wonderful home fire cooked breakfast. See the restored autos and trucks at the Sunday cruise-in.

Throughout the weekend our area businesses will display their transportation-related products and services.  Many other events will be held throughout the weekend, all with a transportation flavor of excitement.  Delphi is also known for its fine antique stores, specialty shops, historic buildings and museums, all of which will be open for your enjoyment and education.  Don’t worry about finding the location of the events on your own; park you car once and enjoy trolley or vintage vehicle rides to all the locations for just a buck!  Kids, bring dad to celebrate Father’s Day in a style that he’ll really enjoy and talk about for years to come. There will be something fun for all ages.

Delphi is also home to a wonderful 10-mile historic trail system that encourages recreational fitness while learning area history. Spend the entire weekend with places to stay and fun things to do on a family friendly budget!  Come to Delphi where transportation history comes alive.  Circle your calendar, June 16th & 17th, Delphi Indiana

4. EXHIBITS

_American Spirit_

The Lincoln Museum is hosting _American Spirit_, a temporary exhibition of prints, photographs and posters from the corporate art collection of the St. Louis-based financial services company A.G. Edwards and Sons, Inc. Albert Gallatin Edwards, founder of the company, was a relative by marriage to the Lincolns and was appointed by President Lincoln in 1865 as one of the assistant treasury secretaries.

The exhibit, consisting of more than 20 images produces during the 19th and 20th centuries, focuses on the visual definition of liberty and the American spirit. The show demonstrates how American artists strive to create images that define the central idea behind the foundation and the strength of our county. The pieces in the exhibit take the observer on a pictorial journey through the history of our nation, from images of 19th-century "stump" speeches and Currier and Ives lithographs through Liberty Bond and military posters produced during WWI.  Continuing the journey, the artwork enters the latter 20th-century's pop art movement, highlighted by the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. In addition, Peter Kaplan's photographs of the Statue of Liberty speak to the American ideals of freedom and ingenuity. The exhibit will be showing from May 27 through November 26.
