Message from the Indiana Historical Society

John Harris will be leaving the post of Director, Local History Services (LHS), Indiana Historical Society, as of January 31, 2007 after 19 years of service.  John Herbst, IHS President and CEO, said, “John Harris has strengthened the IHS’s strong commitment to serving the historical and museum organizations around the state through technical advice, training and support.  John will be sorely missed and he has our best wishes for this next phase of life after so many years of faithful service.”

While a search for a replacement is conducted, Tom Krasean will serve as interim LHS director.  Tom founded the Local History Services Department in 1982 and after hiring John Harris, worked on the campaign for the Indiana History Center and subsequently with the IHS planned giving program.  Katherine Dill, former LHS assistant, is also returning to help during the transition period.

Letter from John Harris

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Please forgive this somewhat impersonal way of announcing some very personal  news.  After 19 years of performing field services work for the Indiana  Historical Society I have decided to resign my position as director of the Local  History Services Department.  I came to IHS in November 1987 as the new assistant  director of the Field Services Division.  It was my fervent hope that I could  somehow make a difference in the viability and professionalism of local  historical societies and museums in our state.  With the passage of time and  various reorganizations at the society, the name changed from Field Services to  Local History Services.  My title changed from assistant director of a division  to director of a department.  But the essence of the job, essentially the  providing of assistance, training, and resources to local history organizations  throughout the state remained the same.  Now it is time for me to move on to new  challenges.

A field services position can be both rewarding and frustrating.  It is rewarding  when, in some small way, you assist a colleague or an organization become more  professional, achieve a higher level of viability, or succeed in meeting some  chosen goal.  It is sometimes frustrating because one can seldom point to a  successful project or organization anywhere in the state and say with confidence,  “I helped make that happen.”  After all, it is you, the people laboring in the  local organizations that really make the good things happen.  What I have learned  in these 19 years is that you are some of the hardest working, most dedicated,  “miracle workers” anyone could hope to know.  In my heart, while certainly  appreciating the monthly paychecks provided by the Indiana Historical Society … I  always considered you my real employers.  It has truly been a joy and a privilege  to work for you and with you for the past 19 years.  I wish you the best of luck,  good fortune, and success in the years ahead.  Keep up the good work!

My friend Tom Krasean has come out of retirement to serve as the interim director  of the Local History Services office for the next several months.  He will be  assisted by former LHS Assistant Katherine Dill.  Tom’s e-mail address is  tkrasean@indianahistory.org.  Do not hesitate to turn to him for assistance and  guidance when you need it.

For those who want to keep their address books up to date, after today my new address will be 716 Dorman St., Indianapolis, IN 46202 or e-mail jharris1@indy.rr.com.

Yours,

Jmh

Letter from Connie Rendfeld

Dear Readers,

I have similar news to report.  I have resigned from the Indiana Historical  Society after 27 years.  These last few years as Associate Director of Local  History Services have been very rewarding.  I was able to learn so much from John  but I was also able to meet some of the best people in the world, those who  devote their time and talents to preserve their local history.

I want to thank everyone for all the assistance and support you have given me  with COMMUNIQUE ONLINE.  I sincerely hope that the newsletter provided you with  the information you needed.  I have taken a position with the Indiana State  Library, so I hope to continue to see many of you at professional meetings within the state.

If you want to get in touch with me, send an e-mail to carendfeld@aol.com.

Sincerely,

Connie
