Up on the lake in Cleveland, work on a union depot did not get under way until
almost two decades into the twentieth century. When it was done, the project remade
the heart of the city and focused development on and around Public Square. The
square was a feature of Cleveland from its earliest days, but by the turn of the
twentieth century it was surrounded by a jumble of commercial structures and had
not fulfilled its potential as an urban focal point. This view looks west from
Public Square’s east side. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument
in the right foreground stands in the same location today. (Sherwin-Williams Company)
