A 1937 atlas of Columbus showed the Union Station complex in the form it would
retain for nearly forty more years. The southern two arches of the arcade had
been demolished in the late 1920s so the driveway could be extended into a loop
that was convenient for autos; and the train shed had been replaced in the early
1930s by an enclosed concourse. The High Street viaduct was lined on both sides
by shops and offices that flanked the entrance and reflected its design. Freight
terminals and yards bordered Union Station on north and south. (Franklin Survey
