
At the time of its demolition, the Union Station arcade was listed on the Register
of Historic Places. Because Columbus had a pending application for federal transit
funds that would have reused the arcade as a transit facility, it should not have
been demolished until the federal government had completed review of the application.
Because of this violation of federal law, local preservationists were able to
get a temporary order to stop the demolition. By that time, however, only the
north arch of the arcade remained. Over a three-year period a local nonprofit
group was able to move the arch to a new public park. (Jeffrey T. Darbee)
