The curved inner walls of the vast rotunda had two large murals depicting national and local history and the march of development from pioneer to modern times. The colorful figures were drawn from real individuals. These were known as “shadow” mosaics, in which colored plaster formed large areas such as the grass and soil in this mural. Figures and objects were rendered in glazed tiles, in great detail and vibrant colors. This view is from the top of the arched eastern elevation, looking westward. The large rectangular entrance to the concourse over the tracks is at the left. (Jeffrey T. Darbee)
