In contrast to the interior design, Columbus Union Station had a decidedly subdued exterior. It evoked the Richardsonian Romanesque style, also popular during the late nineteenth century. Named for Henry Hobson Richardson, its premier practitioner, this style was characterized by heavy, dark compositions that incorporated massive masonry walls and generally restrained ornamentation.
