Though long neglected and showing its age, the Columbus Union Station arcade retained
most of its elegant Beaux-Arts design until its demolition in 1976. A product
of the late nineteenth century, Beaux-Arts classicism drew its inspiration from
the architecture of Greece and Rome and was the accepted style for the monumental
public buildings of the “City Beautiful” movement. The Union Station
arcade was Columbus’s sole effort in that movement. (Jeffrey T. Darbee)
