Chicago, South Shore & South Bend Railroad wooden line car 1101,
rebuilt in 1927 from combination passenger-baggage car 72, incorporated by
conscious design many of the safety features that linemen had been fighting for
—and filing lawsuits to secure—since the 1910s: a wide deck that could be raised,
lowered, and pivoted by pneumatic controls, with fold-down handrails and footguards.
Here, linemen are seen at work at Homan Avenue in Hammond, Indiana,
sometime during the 1930s or early 19402.
