The South Shore’s steel line car 1100, rebuilt in 1947 from Indiana Railroad
car 376, incorporated and improved upon the safety features of its predecessor,
line car 1101. Eventually, full railings were added around the fixed front platform.
Originally built in 1926 as combination passenger-baggage car 376 for
Union Traction of Indiana, then modified for Railway Post Office operation by
Indiana Railroad during the 1930s, car 376 went to the South Shore in 1941
and emerged from the Michigan City shops in 1947 as the railroad’s new
line car.
At the time of this writing (2002), the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation
District
still used line car 1101 occasionally. It is the oldest electric interurban
car in active railroad service.
