The Groundbreaking Technology Behind the RFK Hologram
The History Center is the first museum in the country to use the 3D holographic projection technology you’ll see in You Are There 1968: Robert F. Kennedy Speaks.
Produced by Dimensional Studios in London, the Musion Eyeliner system is a high-definition video projection system which allows three-dimensional moving images to appear within a live stage setting – with no props and no 3D glasses. You may have seen it in action at the Grammy Awards when Madonna performed “live” on stage with Gorillaz, a virtual band.
An actor portraying Robert F. Kennedy, and three actors playing the supporters who surrounded him in an Indianapolis park on the night of April 4, 1968, recreated the scene and filmed it in Los Angeles. They will “appear” on the back of a flatbed truck in the You Are There experience. Historical interpreters playing real people who were at the campaign rally will be there to interact with visitors.
“More than watching a film of this incredible moment in history, the 3D truly allows our visitors to experience it,” says Jeff Mills, director of exhibitions design and production. “It’s a case where the technology greatly enhances the emotional impact.”
