In 1949 Indianapolis hosted the final Encampment for the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization of Union Soldiers who fought during the Civil War. At its peak in 1909 the organization boasted 400,000 members nationwide but by 1949 only 16 members remained and only six were able to make the trip to Indianapolis. This photographs shows one of those veterans, James A. Hard, being pushed my a member of the military police.
