From the Cataloger's Desk: Calling all race fans!

Pit Board 3The IHS library was fortunate to receive issues of the Indianapolis Speedrome's Pit Board, which were recently cataloged and made available to patrons. Our holdings represent 36 years of racing action (1977 to 2013) and include more than 800 weekly publications. These were distributed during the racing season and offered results, schedules, scoreboards and stories from the track. Other materials, such as special programs, racing rules, yearbooks and calendars, also form part of this fantastic collection.

The Indianapolis Speedrome opened on Sept. 9, 1941, and is the oldest operating figure eight track in the United States. The venue has hosted various events over the years, ranging from stock and midget car races to demolition derbies. Some very famous names have competed at the track, including Tony George, Ed Carpenter, Tony Stewart, Sterling Marlin, and Michael Waltrip ... just to name a few! Their images and stories, as well as those of countless other drivers, can be found throughout the pages of Pit Board. To quote an article from the May 6, 1977 issue, "As it has been since the beginning, the Speedrome is more than a few hours of engine-roaring competition before an eager crowd that understands the thrill of speed. It is a place where legends can – and sometimes do – begin." How true!

Whether you're interested in learning about the exciting sport of racing, the charismatic drivers or the historic Speedrome itself, please visit the IHS library and browse our collection of Pit Board!
