What are your Favorite Things?

October 21, 2015

Behind-the-scenes in the
Indiana Historical Society, people work to preserve Indiana?s past. They
care for, organize and share the many artifacts in our
collection. In the process, they get to see old maps, read personal correspondence,
and discover unique objects and stories.

Since they get to see so
many items in the collection, I asked Collections staff members: What?s your
favorite thing?

They chose a variety of
artifacts which you can see on display in the library until December 28th.
I hope that when you next visit, you?llcome to the Libraryand
discover (and vote for) your favorite thingchosen by the staff. The
objects with the most votes will be announced in a blog on January 2nd

So what items did our staff
choose? Well, I don?t want to give too much away, so here is just a peak in the
form of song lyrics.

Our Favorite Things
(You know the song…)

Civil
war journal found on the battlefield,
Books
written by Indianaauthors,
Sketchbook
with pictures of faraway places –

These
are a few of our favorite things.

A
watercolor of the capitol that looks like a print,
A
map from 1540 that shows a land bridge,
A
washing machine ad for the ev?ryday woman

These
are a few of our favorite things.

Love
letters with cartoons and caricatures of teachers,
Student
letters to a soldier and a photo of a character,
A
picture where a woman gives a soldier an orange

These
are a few of our favorite things.

When
we see tape used on old books *
When
we see a pen *

We simply remember our
favorite things, and then we don?t feel so bad!

*Adhesives, like tape, degrade over time and are
either no longer effective or leave a gummy film on objects.
*Archivists write with pencils when working with
artifacts and old papers because pens leave permanent marks.
