IHS Announces 2017 Concerts on the Canal Lineup, Free Admission Thursdays

May 15, 2017

Indianapolis—The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) is pleased to announce the 2017 Concerts on the Canal lineup. The popular summer series returns to downtown Indianapolis Thursday nights, May 25 through July 27, and features a special Fourth of July concert. In addition, IHS is offering free admission and extended hours at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center on concert Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on July 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All performances are from 6 to 8 p.m. The 2017 lineup features a variety of styles, from jazz, blues and musical theater to rock, R&B and 80s favorites. Popular area performers include Deb Mullins, Living Proof, My Yellow Rickshaw and more.

Free seating is available on the grassy area along the Canal Walk. In addition, guests can purchase seating on the History Center’s Kruse Family Stardust Terrace in tables of eight ($50/$40 IHS members) or tables of four ($40/$30 IHS members). Single seats are available at the community table ($10/$8 IHS members).

Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and nonalcoholic beverages. Hoaglin To Go will provide a cash bar and outdoor grill, as well as service through the History Center’s Stardust Terrace Café. The Terrace is a smoke-free and pet-free zone.

IHS encourages concert guests to take full advantage of free admission and extended hours by visiting Eli Lilly Hall, which features a rotating schedule of special exhibits, and the Indiana Experience, which features IHS’s newest exhibit, You Are There 1943: Italian POWs at Atterbury. As one of IHS’s most moving exhibits to date, it introduces visitors to Italian prisoners of war in the chapel they built at Camp Atterbury during World War II.

In addition, IHS is making it possible for guests to enjoy a free admission day and concert lineup leading up to the city’s Fourth of July fireworks. On Tuesday, July 4, the History Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. From 6 to 8 p.m., the Indianapolis Municipal Band will perform a special concert of patriotic tunes and marches.

The 2017 Concerts on the Canal series and free admission dates are presented by Franciscan Health. For more information on IHS’s events, programs and resources, call (317) 232-1882 or visit IHS online at www.indianahistory.org.
