    WILLIAM HENRY SMITH MEMORIAL LIBRARY
  Printed Collections - Local History

The Indiana Historical Society holds an extensive collection of histories and atlases for all ninety-two counties. Many titles are available for consultation in the library's reference room, but a listing of materials on a given county can be obtained by searching for that county name in the online catalog.

For each county, there is a consolidated index to the major published histories. The histories indexed are listed at the front of each volume, with a letter code. Each name (personal or business) in the index shows one or more of these letter codes with the page(s) on which that name is mentioned. County atlases include land ownership maps, business directories, and illustrations of local scenes.

County histories may contain brief histories of towns, churches, schools, businesses, etc. In addition, the library collects separately published histories in these areas.

Useful searches include:

adams county
adams county AND history
adams county AND maps
adams county AND biography

[name of specific town, chuch, business, etc.]
