NOTES: |
|
Cecil Everett Beeson (1905–94) collected the bulk of the photographs in this collection from individuals and families in Blackford County, Indiana. Born 19 August 1905 in Wabash, Indiana, to William H. Beeson and Jennie (Jenks) Beeson, he moved with his father and five siblings to Hartford City, Indiana, in 1911 following the death of his mother in childbirth. He may have lived with relatives in Peru, Indiana, for a brief period in 1913. Beeson graduated from Hartford City High School in 1924 and worked for the American Window Glass Company until 1927. He then began a career with the United States Postal Service where he was a letter carrier until 1954 and a dispatching clerk until retirement in 1965.
Beeson married Hannah Catherine Sills 19 August 1928 and fathered two children: Richard Henry Beeson (1930) and Robert Lee Beeson (1931). The couple divorced ca. 1934 and Beeson married Cittie Pearl Helm of Adair County, Kentucky, in 1938. They had two children: Cecil Beeson, Jr. (1939) and Jennie Pearl Beeson (1941).
Beeson began collecting photographs, manuscripts, books, and artifacts as early as the 1940s. He was instrumental in the revival of the Blackford County Historical Society in 1975 and the establishment of a historical museum in Hartford City, Indiana, in 1976. His projects included locating and documenting private cemeteries and soldiers’ graves. He was an avid genealogist and wrote many genealogical histories of Blackford County families.

Items found in the collection.
The bulk of the photographs in the Blackford County Subject Files come from the Cecil Beeson/Blackford County Historical Society acquisition in 1994. The material from this acquisition had been at the Blackford County Historical Society Museum. The collection also includes visual material from previous Beeson donations, including photographs of Cecil Beeson and his family. Mr. Beeson’s attributions were used to identify the images. The processor arranged both original and copy photographs by subject and assigned titles in [ ] brackets. Approximate dates are also in brackets. Most of the reproductions appear to have been made in the 1970s by the Blackford County Historical Society for use in local publications. The collection is arranged into eleven series.
Series 1: Beeson Family Photographs: includes photographs of Cecil Beeson and his siblings as children and young adults; a portrait of William Beeson at work in the Hartford City Paper Mill; and snapshots of Richard, Robert, Cecil Jr., and Jennie Beeson as children and adults.
Series 2: Photographs Attributed to Cecil Beeson: includes documentary photographs believed to have been created by Cecil Beeson in the 1960s. The series includes photographs of cemeteries in Blackford County; aerial views of Hartford City; and documentation of a train wreck at Peru, Indiana.
Series 3: Blackford County––Subject Files: includes photographs made at locations in Blackford County. The images include documentation of what appears to be a full-immersion baptism in the 1930s, the collision of two interurban cars near Kingsland in 1910, floods at various locations in the county in 1913, a portrait of factory workers involved in a violent strike at the National Steel Casting Company in 1924, and portraits of schoolchildren at small country schools.
Series 4: Hartford City––Subject Files: contains photographs taken at locations in Hartford City. Images include small business owners and employees, schoolchildren and teachers, and factory workers in the paper and glass industries.
Series 5: Indiana Counties––Subject Files: includes portraits of individuals and families, scenes of floods; and street scenes in Delaware, Jay, Grant, Miami and Wabash counties.
Series 6: Blackford County and Hartford City––Portraits: contains identified and unidentified portraits made in Hartford City and Blackford County. The subjects are families, individuals, and groups posed in farm yards and unidentified studios.
Series 7: Non-Indiana Portraits: contains six photographs signed by young men who appear to have attended the University of Michigan ca. 1900. The provenance of these items is unknown but they likely belonged to a Blackford County resident.
Series 8: Album: contains one album of snapshots created by an unidentified individual between 1925 and 1937. The title, From Here, There and Everywhere, 1925 to 1937 is written in hand on the final page. The first four pages contain eight snapshots of a young woman with friends at a lake and country home. The photographs are not identified but two images include Helen Seelig, a Blackford County teacher. The remaining photographs show the young woman on a ship and with friends at a lake.
Series 9: Cirkut Photographs: contains twelve Cirkut photographs created between ca. 1913 and 1936. The subjects include the American Window Glass Company offices and grounds, the Hartford City Paper Mill grounds, students at Hartford City High School ca. 1913, two portraits of members of the Twentieth District of Rotary International, employees of the Overhead Door Corporation, and young men about to enter military service during World War I.
Series 10: Stereographs: contains twelve stereograph views in Blackford County. The subjects include schools, and churches. The photographs were made between 1897 and ca. 1912.
Series 11: Artifacts: contains one mirrored photo-button advertising the Senate Saloon.
