HISTORICAL SKETCH

The New Albany and Portland Ferry Company operated between New Albany, Indiana, and Portland, Kentucky, a town adjoining Louisville, in the period 1860-1885. Interests in the firm were held by Mrs. E. M. McHarry, Moses Irvin, and W. A. Duckwall. Names of boats which occur in the company's records include the Ben South, Night, Music, Adelaide, Excelsior, Frank McHarry, and Thomas Conner. During the Civil War, the firm did a good deal of work for the federal government, including a trip to Fort Donelson by the Ben South.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection, coming from four different sources, includes invoices, logs, receipts, and portage and cash books, some in photocopy form. The collection covers the period 1862-1884. Day-to-day receipts and expenses make up the bulk of the record. The photocopied log of the Ben South's trip to Fort Donelson in [1864?] is the longest account given.
