BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Four brothers, Jerathmel B., John, Daniel, and Joseph S. Jenckes, probably from Rhode Island, were all early settlers of Vigo County, Indiana. They all borrowed money from Providence banker and philanthropist Nicholas Brown (1769-1841), who gave his name to Brown University. They all dealt in land in Vigo County, and about 1830 were running a distillery. Joseph and Jerathmel were stockholders in the State Bank of Indiana in 1835.

Jerathmel Jenckes, who operated somewhat independently of his brothers, was appointed Justice of the Peace in Lost Creek Township in 1832, and held the office until at least 1841.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection consists of the ledger (1832-1841) of Jerathmel Jenckes as Justice of the Peace, of notes taken from between the pages of the ledger, and of letters (1829-1830) from three of the Jenckes brothers to Nicholas Brown.

In Folder 1 are letters from John, Joseph, and Jerathmel

Jenckes to Nicholas Brown, about the status of his loans.

The ledger (BV 0738) records the various cases decided by Jerathmel Jenckes as Justice of the Peace. Material in

Folder 2 amplifies this record.
