HISTORICAL SKETCH

Jacob M. Abbott, son of George and Emaline Abbott, was born in Fitchville, Huron County, Ohio on May 22, 1843. A member of Company D One Hundred First Ohio Infantry, Abbott died in a Nashville, Tennessee hospital on January 24, 1863.

Lou S. S. McNutt was a nurse (or volunteer) at Hospital No. 3, Nashville, Tennessee. She and her husband, a Methodist minister, cared for Abbott shortly before his death.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains a letter written by Lou S.S. McNutt to Emaline Abbott informing her of her son's death. Written February 1, 1863, the letter is an account of Abbott's last days in the hospital and a reassurance of his new found salvation.
