A resident of Marion, Grant County, Indiana, Second Lieutenant William Carroll was mustered into Company H Twelfth Indiana Infantry on May 15, 1861. On May 19, 1862, he was mustered out as his term had expired.

The collection contains two letters (1861) written by Carroll to his brother Robert Patterson. Writing from Camp Antietam, Sharpsburg, Maryland, Carroll describes a near fatal run in with a "Secesh" and discusses Union soldiers' morale and camp conditions.
