HISTORICAL SKETCH

William Elliott was born (circa) 1835 in Washington County, Indiana. A farmer in Salem, Indiana, Elliot was mustered into Company G Eighteenth Indiana regiment on September 26, 1862. On July 26, 1865, Corporal Elliott was mustered out in Savannah, Georgia.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains the transcript of a letter written by Elliott to his cousin, W. S. Charles, Lieutenant Colonel of the Eighteenth Indiana Veterans Volunteers. Dated October 22, 1864, Elliott describes the ride of General Phil Sheridan at the battle of Cedar Creek (Virginia).
