HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Samuel Carr was born in Frederick County, Virginia in 1782. He apparently served as an apprentice carpenter in Virginia and Kentucky before settling in Charlestown, Indiana in 1810 where he worked as a carpenter. Samuel Carr was also a veteran of the War of 1812. John Carr served as a lieutenant in the state militia in the 1830s and was a judge for the Clark County circuit court in the 1820s and 1830s.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of documents and letters regarding Samuel and John Carr. Items regarding Samuel Carr include bills and correspondence concerning the carpentry business and documents regarding his pension for service during the War of 1812. John Carr materials include documents appointing him associate judge for Clark County, militia appointments, and several letters from various individuals.
