Allen W. Ogborn, son of Edwin F. Ogborn, was born in Greensfork, Wayne County, Indiana. On July 29, 1861, he was mustered into Company B Nineteenth Indiana Infantry. The Nineteenth participated in the battles of Gainesvillle, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, South Mountain, and Antietam. Corporal Ogborn was mortally wounded at Gettysburg. He died on July 18, 1863 in a Philadelphia hospital.

The collection contains Ogborn's diary (1863) written during his time with Company B Nineteenth Indiana Infantry. Ogborn describes marches, fighting, and homesickness. There is a small two sided comb inside a pocket in the back of the diary. Also included is a photograph of Ogborn in military uniform which is stored in Visual Collections.
