BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Roy Cole Anderson was born in 1895 in Bedford, Indiana.  He joined the army and served in France as a master sergeant in charge of guns and heavy machinery. He returned to Indiana and married Margaret Moore Louthan on 4 October 1921. They had one daughter, Eleanor C., born ca 1928.

Anderson came from a family of watch makers and jewelers. He was trained as a watch maker at the Waltham Watch Factory in Waltham, Massachusetts.  In 1923 Anderson opened a jewelry shop at 4161 North College Avenue in Indianapolis, Ind..  In 1928 he expanded his business and moved to the Hatherleigh Building at 4188 North College Avenue.  In 1930 he moved the business back to the original location and remained there until the business closed in 1942.

The Parish of St. Joan of Arc was established in 1921.  The first church was built in the Spanish mission style.  The parish experienced growth and in 1928 began fundraising for a larger church to be built. The new and larger Roman basilica style church was completed in 1929.  The growth of the parish is partially responsible for the flourishing of the neighborhood around the church and school.  It became one of the largest and more prosperous parishes in Indianapolis until a new parish, Christ the King, was established in 1939.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of original silent black-and-white 16mm film and 2 duplicate VHS copies, one master and one user copy.  Sections of the original footage containing family materials (at the beginning and middle ) were spliced from the film and returned to donor at an earlier time.

The film was shot in 1929 when Roy Cole Anderson’s business was located in the Hatherleigh building in Indianapolis.  The images include scenes of the Indiana State Fairgrounds, a train (possibly the Monon), urban street scenes, schoolchildren running in relay races beside the St. Joan of Arc school building, construction of the St. Joan of Arc church at 4217 North Central Avenue, neighborhood street scenes with close ups of various persons, front of house (possibly 4100 block of Guilford Avenue where the Andersons lived at the time of filming), two children on tricycles, aerial view of the neighborhood assumingly from the top of the under construction church, close-ups of construction workers, small girl dancing and young woman in front of Garfield Park Conservatory, 2505 Conservatory Drive. It is unlikely that the young girl is Eleanor, as she would have been an infant at the time of filming.
