historiCAL SKETCH

Covered bridge construction in Indiana began in 1820 at Floyds Knobs, in Floyd County. Construction of covered bridges throughout the state coincided with the building of state roads between principal settlements. Covered bridge construction continued in Indiana until the end of the nineteenth century.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains ninety-one black-and-white photographs of covered bridges in the following Indiana counties: Adams, Brown, Franklin, Greene, Marion, Montgomery, Owen, Putnam, Randolph, Rush, Union and Wayne. An unknown photographer or photographers made the images between 1960 and 1962.

Most photographs are identified by county but do not list an exact location or road within the county. Photographs made circa 1960 are stamped on the verso as follows: Indiana Covered Bridge [County Name]. An identification number is also stamped on the back of these items. Similar information is handwritten in ink on photographs made circa 1961-1962.

The processor at the Indiana Historical Society arranged the photographs in folders by county, and within the folders by numerical order. The number of bridges represented in the photographs is listed in square brackets after each county in the Contents section below.
