Historical/BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

International Harvester (now Navistar International Corporation), founded in 1902 following the invention and early development of the motorized industry, began manufacturing and distributing trucks in the early years of the 20th century. The company built a plant devoted to the construction of truck engines on West Washington Street in Indianapolis between 1936 and 1938.

William Paul Lake (12/3/1900–08/01/1982) was the Superintendent of Construction for the J. L. Simmons Company on International Harvester Plant projects, both at Indianapolis and La Porte, Indiana. He was born in Fancy Prairie, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign as an engineer.  In his later career he spent many years with the Engineering Department of San Diego in California. Mr. Lake collected the photographs in this collection while he was the Superintendent of Construction here in Indianapolis during the International Harvester building project on West Washington Street.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains 28 photographs that document the construction of the International Harvester factory at 1065 West Washington Street in Indianapolis. The images are mostly exterior views of some of the plant’s multiple buildings during and after construction. One image is a panoramic Cirkut photograph of the construction site viewed from West Washington Street. The construction took place between 1936 and 1938 when William Paul Lake was Superintendent of Construction for the J. L. Simmons Company, contractors on this project.

The photographs are stored in chronological order. Captions taken from each photograph are described in the Contents section of the collection guide in quotation marks. The photographs are stored with other collections in one full-size document case, and one Cirkut photograph is stored separately with the panoramic photographs in hanging storage.
