There is no existing comprehensive history of the Indiana Society of Architects. The Indianapolis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) was in existence as early as 1889. Early officers in the organization included Arthur Bohn, Bernard Vonnegut, James B. Lizius, Robert Platt Daggett, and D. A. Bohlen. The Indiana Chapter of AIA was organized on January 5, 1910. In 1911, Ennis R. Austin of South Bend was president and Herbert Foltz was secretary of the 55-member organization. Although it retained its AIA affiliation, the organization's name was changed to the Indiana Society of Architects (ISA) and officially organized in Indianapolis on February 17, 1917, with A. Frank Wickes of Gary as president. The charter of the Indiana Chapter was automatically transferred to the new organization. The goal of the new society was to include architects from throughout the state and "to promote the business interests and efficiency of its members." Membership was open to "Any person actually engaged in the practice of architecture as an architect in the State of Indiana."
In addition to an Indianapolis Chapter, the ISA maintains chapters for Northern Indiana, Fort Wayne, and Central/Southern Indiana architects. The ISA is headquartered in Indianapolis where it also operates an architectural bookstore. The goal of the organization is: "To promote, excite, support, and educate the members of the ISA towards the betterment of architecture throughout the state. If the ISA is to be strong, the individuals must receive benefit from their membership."

The records include those of the Indiana Chapter, AIA, the Indiana Society of Architects and its state regional chapters including Central/Southern and Northern. Among the early materials are correspondence regarding architectural issues in which the organization was involved, organization operations, meetings, correspondence with other state chapters, correspondence and related materials regarding the national branch, and local Indiana architectural clubs and competitions. There is also information regarding the reorganization from the Indiana Chapter, AIA, to the Indiana Society of Architects in 1917 and copies of the Monthly Bulletin, the organization's first publication.
Later ISA records include similar types of material and subjects. Among those are legislation regarding architects and building codes, relationships with the construction industry, and the education of architects. There are also minutes and other board of director related materials from 1933 to 1989 with some gaps. There also are correspondence, records, and publications regarding professional standards, relevant legislation and lobbying, women and minorities in the profession, and membership surveys. Also, records, publications, and correspondence involving the society's general operation such as annual reports, election of officers, membership dues, the operation of the bookstore, the organization's finances, and the maintenance of the ISA's offices in Indianapolis. There is also information and correspondence regarding the ISA's relationship with the Indiana Construction Industry Council and related construction organizations, 1872-1981.
Also included in the ISA records are copies of the organization's publications including the Indiana Architect, 1957-1982, Sketches (Indianapolis Chapter newsletter), 1973-1992, rosters of members, handbooks, and special publications. There are also photographs, drawings, and other entry information regarding the ISA's Triennial and Biennial Awards competition, 1968-1990. The records also contain ISA Director's (1960) and Executive Director's (1970-1986). These mainly contain information relevant to board of directors and executive board meetings, but they also contain some reports and correspondence. There is also information, programs, publications, and registrations concerning ISA, AIA, and other architectural related meetings.
The records also include reports, publications, and correspondence regarding the national AIA and the East Central Regional Council. AIA materials mainly concern publications and some correspondence while Regional Council items deal with financial records, meetings, and correspondence. There is also a substantial amount of information regarding the state regional chapters for ISA. Most prevalent are the 11 manuscript boxes of the Indianapolis Chapter's records which includes reports, correspondence, board minutes, bylaws, awards, rosters, meetings, membership records, financial records, and programs, 1959-1990. There are also correspondence, meeting minutes, membership records, and financial records for the Central/Southern Chapter, 1964-1976, and the Northern Chapter, 1959-1978 of the ISA.
